Celebrating Native American Heritage Month

Ramsey County Library Celebrates National Native American Heritage Month

Every November, National Native American Heritage Month invites communities across the country to recognize and honor the histories, cultures and contributions of Native American, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian peoples. Inspired by decades of advocacy—including early efforts by Native leaders and organizations to establish a national day of recognition—this month now serves as a dedicated time to uplift Indigenous voices, strengthen relationships and celebrate resilience and creativity.

At Ramsey County Library, we celebrate our diverse Indigenous communities all year long, and National Native American Heritage Month offers a special opportunity to highlight that ongoing commitment. This work includes mindful practices like offering land acknowledgments in many of our spaces, continuing our stewardship of art and collection materials that reflect Indigenous presence and expanding programs that connect patrons with Native knowledge keepers, creators and stories.

One way our community can engage this season is through upcoming cultural programming, opens a new window. Events like these offer patrons of all ages a space to learn, participate, and celebrate together.

We also encourage readers to explore Indigenous storytelling through our carefully curated booklists. Stories by Native creators—especially in youth and teen literature—create powerful pathways for identity, empowerment and connection. When young readers see Indigenous protagonists, cultures, humor and the complexities of contemporary Native life reflected on the page, it expands both understanding and belonging.

We invite you to explore, read, attend, and celebrate alongside us. Uplifting Indigenous stories is one way we can honor the past, acknowledge the present, and imagine a future shaped by shared learning and respect.
