Andrew Latham is a professor at Macalester College where he specializes in the study of international relations and political thought.

They were the desperate immigrants of their era, driven by famine to migrate in unprecedented numbers to an America that offered a harsh welcome and an uncertain future. After decades of bloody internecine conflict and a precarious peace, their nation now presents an obstacle to the resolution of the Brexit dispute. From the Great Potato Famine of the 1840s to the present, we’ll explore why such a small island has exerted such an outsized influence on history.
