My Top Ten of 2013 - Marcus L.

The LuminariesToday's Top Ten is from Marcus L. of RCL - Roseville.  Over to you, Marcus!

Happy end of the year everybody. My list is a bit tardy because I had to finish the Booker winner The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton about 1860's gold rush New Zealand and it lives up to the hype. 834 pages of captivating storytelling. So this year, I have 11 great reads on my top Ten

The Old WaysPlus:

A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki - A diary of a Japanese teen washes up on a Pacific Northwest Island

The Old Ways: A Journey On Foot by Robert MacFarlane - My love of psychogeography is warmly rewarded.

Of Africa by Wole Soyinka - powerful essays on African vitality and struggles

How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia by Mohsin Hamid - A story set up as a self-help book- insightful and wiseHow to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia

Anicillary Justice by Ann Leckie - An AI starship in stuck in a human body because of a betrayal. Great first novel of a trilogy

Dissident Gardens by Jonathan Lethem - Generations of radical Jewish women in New York City connect with greater or smaller struggles

The Murder Room: The Heirs of Sherlock Holmes Gather To Solve the World's Most Perplexing Cold Cases by Michael Capuzzo- fascinating non-fiction book on the Vidocq Constellation GamesSociety

Constellation Games: A Space Opera Soap Opera by Leonard Richardson - the cover is awful, but the story is golden about a reviewer of alien video games- better than Ready Player One

Bleeding Edge by Thomas Pynchon - Still thinking about his 9/11 novel 6 months later

Boxers / Saints by Gene Luen Yang- Two essential graphic novels about teens using their faith as a guide during the Boxers rebellion
