5. Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan. Enchanting book about the love of the written word in all its forms.

6. Titus Groan by Mervyn Peake. Strange, unearthly, but beautifully-written, with characters and places that stay with you a long time.MaddAddam

7. Life after Life by Kate Atkinson. The book uses a clever plot device to show iterations of life and the role of chance, or choices made, in that life.

8. MaddAddam by Margaret Atwood. Excellent third book in a series, about life after the end of things. Hopeful.

9. The Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness. Book 2 of the All Souls Trilogy. A cornucopia of characters, places, and the supernatural. Fans are eagerly awaiting the third book in the series.
