It's All About .... Abraham Lincoln!

Lincoln posterEverywhere you look these days, it's all Abraham Lincoln.

The biggest news is probably the release of Steven Spielberg's Lincoln, starring Daniel Day-Lewis.  The New York Times had a fascinating article about Day-Lewis's acting process and vocal choices.  And if you looked very quickly at the credits on the trailer, you may notice that while the screenplay is written by Tony Kushner, it's based at least in part on Doris Kearns Goodwin's Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln.

Looking for a lighter side of the 16th President?  Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter was recently released on DVD.  The movie was based on the book by Seth Grahame-Smith, which was part of a wave of historical/classics mashed up with the paranormal.

Abe Lincoln's Dream

And newly out for children (but great for all ages) is Lane Smith's Abe Lincoln's Dream, a picture book wherein a young girl named Quincy is taking a tour of the White House and runs into the ghost of Abraham Lincoln.  Wonderfully illustrated, it includes endearing exchanges between Quincy and the President's ghost like this one:

"Are the states united?" he asked.  "Did that work out?"

"Yes, that worked out fine."

"And Man?" he asked.  "Does he no longer fuss 'n' fight with his fellow man?"

"We're still working on that one."

As Lincoln himself said in 1866:  "I do the very best I know how--the very best I can; and I mean to keep doing so until the end.  If the end brings me out all right, what is said about me won't amount to anything.  If the end brings me out wrong, ten angels swearing I was right would make no difference."  (Courtesy of Bartlett's Familiar Quotations.)
